Financial Aid
Most graduate students (except in the M.Eng. Program) have some degree of financial support, so you won’t necessarily be adding to the debt you have accumulated during your undergraduate degree. There are a number of means of financing your studies. They include scholarships, teaching assistantships and research assistantships. The number of major scholarships is limited. However, many graduate students get teaching and research assistantships.
For more information on financial aid for graduate students please visit Carleton’s Graduate Financial Aid or Ottawa’s Graduate Financial Aid informational pages. International Students can also find information on financial aid at Carleton’s financial aid for international students webpage.
Carleton University Domestic PhD Students
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering guarantees a Minimum Doctoral Funding of $35,000/year to successful domestic doctoral candidates. Applicants are encouraged to discuss the exact level and the details of their funding package with potential supervisors as early as possible during the application process. Note that the actual funding level can be higher than the above-mentioned Minimum Doctoral Funding amount if the student receives external awards or higher Research Assistantship.
Scholarships
The major graduate scholarships are:
- The NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council), $17,300 (PGS-A)/$17,500 (CGS) for one year or $21,000 (PGS-B)/$35,000 (CGS) per year for one to four years. It typically requires a GPA of 10/12 or more and is open only to Canadians or permanent residents of Canada.
- The OGS (Ontario Graduate Scholarship), $15,000 per year. (Domestic and International students are eligible.) (links – Carleton, UOttawa)
- The FRQNT (Fonds Québécois de la Recherche sur la Nature et les Technologies), $15,000+fees per year, for Québec residents only.
Applications for all these must be submitted in early October, and the scholarships are awarded late March.
Carleton University and the University of Ottawa may award an extra tuition scholarship (value up to $6,000 per year depending on the program) to recipients of major graduate scholarships.
Teaching Assistantships (TA)
Many M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. students receive TA positions. These involve up to 10 hr. work per week assisting a professor in a course. Typical responsibilities include demonstrating labs, leading tutorials, and grading assignments.
Research Assistantships (RA)
These are paid from the research funds of the supervising professor, and the amount depends on the funds available to the professor and the responsibilities related to the project.
Tuition Fees
Tuition Fees are incurred per term. You can use the links below to estimate the tuition fees for the next year.
Please consider that tuition will likely increase by a small percentage each year and that fees differ depending on if you are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or international student.
