International students are non-Canadian residents who require a student visa to study in Canada. The Institute receives a significant number of international student applications every year.
Since the administrative processes for international applicants take significant time, we require that international applicants complete their application (including submission of the required letters of reference) at least 6 months before the start of the term. Please check specific application deadlines in the online application section.
This Institute receives a large number of applications each year from well-qualified International students for an extremely limited number of positions. Only students in civil engineering with high honours (first or top second) in their country (alternatively defined as 80% or above from universities with a percentage system, 3.0 on a 4 G.P.A. system, 16 out of 20 on the 20 point system) and a high ranking in their graduating class should consider applying. In view of the limited financial resources available at the Institute, preference will be given to applicants who have obtained a scholarship external to Carleton University or the University of Ottawa, which would support their proposed degree program in this Institute.
The academic year starts in September and students generally first register in the Fall semester. The universities and/or the individual professors generally make their decisions concerning financial support/aid by April 15th.
For registration in September, in most cases the student’s file should be complete by January 1st (University of Ottawa) or March 1st (Carleton University). Other applicants will be processed pending availability in the program.
International students studying in Ontario need to cover the combined cost of tuition fees and living expenses. While the cost of living varies from one person to another, our best estimate of the combined costs for a single person studying and living in Ottawa is approximately $42,000/year. Students admitted to OCICE may work as teaching and research assistants only in the university where they are enrolled.
Proficiency in English
Proficiency in English is necessary to pursue graduate studies at Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. All applicants whose first language is not English must satisfy the language requirements specified in the links below. For the University of Ottawa, language requirements can be found under the specific program admission requirements section.
